Christopher Paolini has confirmed that he will, one day, re-visit Alagaesia. This means that we can expect a “fifth book”, but one that is a standalone book to the series. This is a topic we discuss on our “Book 5 and Beyond – Prequels, Stand-alones, and More” page — but it’s one we need to dive into with greater depth. Who would the story follow? When will the story take place? Who is the bad guy (or bad guys)? Christopher has admitted to leaving us clues throughout the current books — and we’ve picked apart those clues to assemble a pretty good look at what we can expect from a potential fifth book!

Eragon’s Guide to Alagaesia was first introduced to readers following the release of Brisingr. Christopher Paolini and Random House teamed up to offer fans a visual guide to the world of Alagaësia – one that captures the look, feel, and magic of the books in a way that the movie failed to do.

In addition to stunning artwork, Eragon’s Guide to Alagaësia offered fans a brief narrative from the series’ main character – Eragon – in the form of a book or guide written by our hero for future Riders. Christopher used the Guide as a tool to offer hints at the future of Alagaësia and our heroes… hints that we are able to use to understand the events which will transpire in Book 4 and beyond. After all, Christopher has stated that the Guide takes place after the events in Book 4.

There’s a lot to learn from Eragon’s Guide to Alagaesia, including the fate of our favorite (and not-so-favorite) characters, several prophecies, and more! We’ve compiled and explained each discovery for you to pick through and enjoy!

Christopher’s recent revelation that “that’s it” – there are simply no other dragons
tied to Riders hidden from view – has left us all wondering whether or not dragons
have a future on Alagaësia. We know that the last dragon, hatching from the green
egg, is a male. The only female dragon (that we know of) is Saphira, meaning that
Saphira will need to choose to mate with the green dragon, Thorn, or Shruikan. But
will she do this, and will this be enough to save the future of the dragon race?

Eragon’s love was prophesied to revolve around one of noble birth and heritage, said to be a powerful, wise, and beautiful woman. However, Eragon hasn’t been the luckiest courter following his failed advances on Arya, princess of the Ellesmera. Does Eragon still have a chance to win over the powerful warrior, or does Eragon’s future love life lay elsewhere?

Our fourth Big Twenty article will explore Eragon’s love life, largely missing from the series so far, and whether or not our hero stands a chance at finding true love.

Du Fyrn Skulblaka, or The Dragon War, was the terrible war which ultimately led to the formation of the Dragon Riders – a sacred and magical pact originally between elves and dragons to ensure peace between the once-warring races. The legend of Du Fyrn Skulblaka continues to live through the years as a tale of caution to future generations of Alagaesia’s residents. However, with the Fall of the Riders and the rise of Galbatorix, it appears that the lessons of the devastating war have been disregarded.

Legend of the first Eragon, an elf, and his dragon Bid’Duam remains a great inspiration to Alagaësia’s people. Although the race of Dragon Riders has since fallen – Galbatorix and his twisted dragon Shruikan having tarnished all that the sacred bond between dragon and Rider – a glimmer of hope lives on within a young Rider and his dragon who follow paths parallel to Eragon and Bid’Duam: Eragon and Saphira.

Our third Big Twenty article will explore the original Eragon and his dragon, Bid’Duam, as well as their possible deaths and the role they will play – dead or alive – in Inheritance (Book 4).

Angela the witch. Angela the herbalist. Angela the justwhattheheckisshe. My role as a curator of the Inheritance community over the past seven years has offered me a unique glimpse at the inner workings of fan discussions, theories, and hopes; I’ve witnessed the birth and destruction of literally hundreds of theories and one thing never ceases to amaze me: the theory power surrounding Angela the herbalist.
