The dagger acts as a miniature sword and is best suited for close range combat when a sword becomes too long to handle. The dagger is a faster weapon that is capable of being hidden in places the enemy would never expect(belt, boot, inside of robe, etc...) Daggers could also be poisoned, which would make them a lot deadlier than cumbersome swords. Daggers are well mentioned of being used in Alagaesia.

Nasuada is mentioned of having one in Eldest. It is also Solembum's preferred weapon, as stated in Eragon. It is unknown, but highly possible that the soldiers of the Varden, or Empire carry these small weapons.
