Overview

The Empire was founded and is ruled by Galbatorix. It contains the majority of the human population. The Elves, the Dwarves, and the Varden oppose the Empire, and the southern country of Surda, which seceded from the Empire, does so in secret. Most of the citizens of the Empire do not oppos his rule; it is likely they like the protection of the Empire. The only real complaint about the Empire is the taxation, which is necessary to keep any government maintained and especially to provide a defense force. The main evidence that the empire, or more specifically Galbatorix, is evil is his willingness to sacrifice soldiors, citizens of the empire, and anyone else necessary to keep himself in power. This is evident in that he sent thousands of soldiors into the dwarven mountains to wipe out the Varden, only to have them slaughtered. this alone does not prove his malevolency, but in addition to this he send hundereds of thousands of soldiors onto the burning plains to have a stand off against the Varden. Considering that a bulk of this new army was conscripted, this shows that he clearly considers the lives of those in the empire as tools at his disposal.

Role in the Books

The Empire is ruled by King Galbatorix with his dragon, Shruikan. Galbatorix's rule extends from the ocean to the Hadarac desert. He rules form Uru'baen. The majority of the Empire are humans. The elves, dwarves, Varden, and Surda, a country which seceded from the empire, oppose King Galbatorix.

Eragon

Eragon and his companions have to avoid the Empire's forces on several occasions. The Empire has employed humans, the Ra'zac, and Urgals against its own people.

Eldest

The Empire's army occupies Carvahall. Under the threat, the villagers flee to Surda.
