Physical Description

"Bright as a flaming sun, the dragon hung before Eragon and everyone clustered along the Crags of Tel'naeir, buffeting them with gusts from its mighty wings. The dragon's body appeared to be on fire as the brilliant awn illuminated its golden scales and sprayed the ground and trees with dazzling chips of light. It was far larger than Saphira, large enough to be several hundred years old, and proportionally thicker in its neck, limbs, and tail...the creature's left foreleg had been severed by a terrible blow, leaving a helpless white stump in place of the once mighty limb." (Eldest, pg. 267)

Eragon

Glaedr does not make an appearance in Book One.

Eldest

Glaedr shows himself, and his Rider, Oromis, in Book Two. They reveal themselves to Eragon and Saphira, who are awed and relieved that they are not the only Dragon Riders left in Alagaesia. Soon after, Eragon and Saphira begin their instruction, Glaedr being Saphira's teacher. Glaedr teaches her many things, such as aerial combat, breathing fire, and of her old dragon kin.

However, tragedy occurs one day when Saphira tries to woo Glaedr at the Stone of Broken Eggs during a lesson. Glaedr gets enraged and Saphira attacks him, resulting in a quick fight between the two dragons. Glaedr returns to Oromis, refusing to speak, but letting Oromis heal his wound inflicted by Saphira. Saphira's pride is deeply wounded from this occurance, but she apologizes to Glaedr, and Glaedr accepts her apology. Everything returns to normal after that.

Glaedr also teaches Eragon as well one day when Oromis is ill and is unable to teach Eragon. He teaches them about the pact between the dragons and the elves, and how it affected both elves, dragons, and humans.

When Eragon and Saphira leave for Surda, however, Glaedr does not speak of anything, although he is present when Oromis bids Eragon farewell. The reason for his silence is not known.

Quotes

"Bright as a flaming sun, the dragon hung before Eragon and everyone clustered along the Crags of Tel'naeir, buffeting them with gusts from its mighty wings. The dragon's body appeared to be on fire as the brilliant dawn illuminated its golden scales and sprayed the ground and trees with dazzling chips of light. It was far larger than Saphira, large enough to be several hundred years old, and proportionally thicker in its neck, limbs, and tail. Upon its back sat the Rider, robes startling white against the brilliance of the scales...As the dragon turned to land, Eragon gasped; the creature's left foreleg had been severed by a terrible blow, leaving a helpless white stump in the palce of a once mighty limb. Tears filled his eyes."
