Overview

What is S.O.E?

S.O.E. stands for Shurtugal's Open Encyclopia. SOE is controlled by shurtugal.com staff.

What does S.O.E. do?

SOE provides a resource for Inheritance fans that they can also add to and correct.

Who's in charge of S.O.E.?

You can find the list of moderators here. Moderators should be alerted if an offense occurs, and also provide guidance. Talk to moderators on their talk page.

How can I become a member of S.O.E?

Click the link to "log in/register" at the top right of the browser. You only need to enter a username and password!

What pages can I edit? Do I have to be registered?

Users, registered or not, can edit the pages by clicking the "edit" tab at the top of the browser. All users can edit talk pages, but ask permission before making major edits to user pages.

Registering has many benefits. It can be difficult to keep track of unregistered users because their IP address can change. Registering also gets users their own talk and user page.

How do I find other S.O.E. members on this site?

You can find a complete list here. The URL for talkpages is www.shurtugal.com/encyclopedia/index.php/User_talk:USERNAME. The URL for user contributions is www.shurtugal.com/encyclopedia/index.php/Special:Contributions/USERNAME.

What happens when someone breaks the rules?

First the user may be warned by another user and then banned if a moderator finds out or if the offense happens again. Users are free to warn other users, but only staff members can ban users. Some bans will happen right away and without warning- it really depends on the offence.

What Not to Write

Main article: Rules and Guidelines

Please do not use explicit language that might be offensive to others. Do not use racial or sexual language. All opinions should go under an options or theories section. Otherwise, facts only please. This means no speculation in non-theory sections and articles.

Do not make personal pages, whether they are about yourself or your opinions. Instead, register and make your user page (links to userpages are written as YOURUSERNAME.) All articles should be directly related to the Inheritance Cycle.

Do not provide external links to websites with adult material.

Do not plagiarize, especially not without giving the correct credit to the source you took the information from. Just as in any other place, plagiarism is BAD!

Formating Pages

Headers

There are two ways to do headers. The first one is the HTML way of doing <h2>Header Here</h2>. The other way is the one that Wikimedia uses. It works like this: == Header Here ==. That is the equivalent of going <h2>Header Here</h2>. So Header 1 (the header underneath the title), <h2> or =, is the top header and then you can have sub categories, <h2> or ==, and then even more sub categories, <h3> or ===.

Formating Text

Bold is <b>bold</b>, italics is <i>italics</i>, and underline is <u>underline</u>.

Also, using MediaWiki's formatting, bold is bold, italics is italics, and bold+italics is bold+italics.

To format the spacing between lines use these: <p> and <br>. <p> makes a new line start like this:

<p>Paragraph or line or whatever.</p> See how I went to the next line? That's what <p> does.

<br></br>, or <br />, inserts a line-break into a page. These tags should not be wrapped around text, like the <p> tag, but rather should be put right next to each other (if using HTML) or using the <br /> (if using XHTML).

<br />Lots of writing or what ever.

Tables

Tables are tricking and confusing. Mediawiki does not recognize HTML tables. If you need a tables, copy one from a template and change the text in it.

Images

Uploading images

Click the "Upload file" link on the sidebar, which will take you here.

Putting Images on Pages

When putting in the code for your image, it is very much like other codes. The code is . If you do not have the "image:" part, then the wiki will not recognize it as an image and will think it is a link. To add a caption, the code would look like this: . The vertical pipe, |, can be found on the \ key. It appears as two vertical dashes on top of each other. By pressing SHIFT you can create a vertical pipe, |.

Size

When putting an image on a page, please format it so it is a thumbnail of the picture and make it 240 pixles and no larger. If your image is smaller than 240 pixels, then you do not have to thumbnail it or make it smaller or larger if you want. But any image over 240 pixels will be deleted from the page or resized. To make a picture thumbnailed and change the size on it, your image code needs to look like this: .

Image Copyrights

When uploading images, you can create a summary for the image. For any image, you must put the correct copyright tag in. If the picture is from one of the books, then it is copyrighted to Random House. In that case you need to use the tag copyrh. If the image is a movie picture, then it is copyrighted to Fox, and you would need to use the copyfox tag. If it is copyrighted to neither of them, then you must use the fairuse tag. Any images that do not have a copyright tag on them will be removed from the site without warning or notification.

Links

If you want to bold or italicize a link, put the apostrophes outside of the brackets, if any.

Links to other PIE articles

  • To link to other articles withint the encyclopedia, use double brackets. for example, Eragon will come out as Eragon.
  • The appearing text can be modified and still be linked to the article. blue dragon will appear as blue dragon but still link to the "Saphira" article.
  • To link to user pages, use USERNAME. To link to user talk pages, use User talk:USERNAME.

External links

  • Pasting the URL of the site will appear as a URL: http://shurtugal.com/
  • Putting single brackets around the URL will hide the address but will be shown by an "external link" icon: appears as [1].
    • You can put link text like this: an Inheritance fansite appears as an Inheritance fansite

Redirecting articles

Remove the contents of the article with the title that will redirect to another article. Put #redirect [[]] at the top and put the title of the page you intend to redirect to between the double brackets.

Templates

There are templates for characters, items, places, and races. If none of these templates applies to a page, then the page will have to be formated by a user. Do not change anything on the templates. If you need to change or add something, add it to the page you are working on, not the hard copy of the templates that everyone uses.

Tags

Tags can be added to any page or section when deemed necessary. Please remember that some tags are for staff use only. A list of tags can be found here.

To use a tag, simply write the tag code anywhere in the article

Discussion Pages

You might notice the Discussion tab at the top of a page. Here you can leave notes about changes you made, or are planning to make. On larger articles, there will generally be a discussion about the adding and removing of large sections, so make sure to check the discussion page before editing.

Also, when leaving a comment, remember to finish with four tiles (--~~~~). This code will add your name (or i.p. address if you aren't logged in or registered), and the time of posting. If you are not registered, you are welcome to add your nickname after you sign.
