Horst
From The Inheritance Encyclopedia
Horst is the blacksmith of Carvahall.
Role in books
Eragon
Horst is first introduced in Eragon when he buys Eragon some meat for his family from the irritable butcher, Sloan. His known family include his two sons, Albriech and Baldor, and his wife, Elain. Baldor helps in many of the fights against the Ra'zac. Albriech also assists in many fights against the Ra'Zac and is involved in a dispute with Thane at the very beggining of his section in Eldest.
Eldest
When the Ra'zac arrive to take away Roran, Horst is the first to plant his heels and oppose them, becoming a formidable foe, though not quite as formidable as the raging Roran and Sloan. When eventually the Carvahall citzens have to leave their home, Horst gives no complaint, other than explaining to Roran how much work he had put into his house, and that Roran had bereft many people, like Baldor and Albriech, from their inheritance. His words touch a note with Roran, but nothing can dissuade him from going and freeing his true love Katrina from the evil clutches of the Ra'zac. Horst follows Roran, but not blindly. When he realizes that Roran had become a merciless warrior, Horst says "You have become a hard man, Stronghammer. Harder than I'll ever be." And despite his words of self-demotion, he can dish out his share of blows in a battle.
