Scrying
From The Inheritance Encyclopedia
Scrying is a magic process that conjurs up an image of an existing person or place. Scrying can produce images on the surface of water or, with more difficulty, air. To scry, a magic user needs to say "draumr kopa," which means "dream stare" in the Ancient Language.

Role in books
Eragon
In Eragon, Eragon sees Arya in a dream. It was scrying, but he was unaware of it. Arya theorizes that she was looking for someone to help her, and she found Eragon.
Eldest
Arya decides that Murtagh must be dead because she is unable to scry him. In Eldest Gannel gives Eragon an amulet that can prevent him from being scryed.
Small Summury
Scrying is the ability to view a person, place, or thing through a smooth and reflective surface. To scry, you must speak the words: "Draumr Kopa" This form of scrying is limited and you can only view the thing you are scrying. You can also only scry things that you have already seen. In Eragon, Eragon scryed Roran and could only see him, because Roran was in Therinsford, in a house where Eragon had never been.
