About the Chat

The chat started out as a Flash Chat, but sometime around late summer of last year, the chat converted to IRC (internet relay chat), which provided many more commands and better moderating options for the chat. People quickly adapted, and the chat soon became stable again. Currently, the chat has about possibly 100+ unique visitors each day, with usually around 25 people on at a time.

Connecting

You can connect to the chat via the Java applet which is located here.

If you're connecting to via mIRC, fill out the new connection form as follows:

Name: Shurtugal Chat
Server: 66.252.10.252
Port(s): 6667
Group: IRCnet

The main room of the server is #General_Discussion

Admins and Mods

The chat is watched over by a group of dedicated administrators and moderators.

  • Mike
Nick: Mike
Position: Founder
Mike is the one who first set up the Flash chat (or who had the idea at least). It's rare that he comes on now, but he still is an admin and is well worth mentioning, for without Mike, the chat wouldn't exist.
  • Parker
Nick: Silvermaster469
Position: Root Admin, Network Administrator
Parker, along with Greg, does the technical stuff on the chat. Parker can be idle most of the time, but when he's around, he can be a real plus to the chat. Parker also works at the Harry Potter fansite Veritaserum as their IRC chat administrator.
Nick: Jamie
Position: Root Admin, Network Administrator
Jamie came to the chat when it first converted to IRC and got a moderating position soon afterwards. Jamie is a great IRC scripter as well. She is probably one of the more lenient mods, but she has little patience for rule-breakers.
Nick: Proto_dragn/Jennifer
Position: Network Administrator
Jen came on the staff after the Job Openings held in August. She is currently the operator of the bot for trivia (whom everyone is thankful for), as well as many other useful tidbits of scripts. She is usually pretty tolerant of the rules, but if you ignore her warnings repeatedly or imposter anyone, beware... She's probably one of the mods who's on the most.
  • Destiny
Nick: Hartanna/Juliene
Position: Server Moderator
Destiny came on the staff also after the Job Openings held in May. She's a very fun and carefree person to be around, but she has little patience for rule-breakers as well (which makes her a great mod), so remember not to role-play in the main room!
Nick: Fiasha
Position: Server Moderator
Fiasha came on the staff when an old moderator Jake left. She can often be found talking about Skittles (which is the meaning of life), or playing trivia and getting a high score. Other times she can be found modding the main room and kicking people off for breaking the rules (getting the hint yet?).
  • Becky
Nick: Becky
Position: Server Moderator
Becky's been around the chat for centuries (or decades, or even years), and she's a kind soul unless you break the rules. She was just recently recruited for chat staff, but don't underestimate her!
  • Paul
Nick: divine
Position: Server Moderator
Paul the tech guy knows everything there is about IRC. You don't mess with the Paul or you will pay dearly for it with your time online. Not really. He doesn't do things like that...we hope... But he's a mod nonetheless and ready to take down some rulebreakers.

Retired Staff

  • Stephanie
Nick: Stephanie/Brisingr_Skulblaka
Position: Retired Moderator
Stephanie was on the chat staff way back in the days when the chat was still Flash. When the chat became IRC, she got reput on the staff and continued to mod faithfully until she left. Everyone misses her sorely!
  • Bob
Nick: Bob
Position: Retired Admin
Bob was the technical guy around the chat along with Greg, but recently he hasn't been coming on the chat at all. Bob was known for his insane moments, but he could be quite an interesting person.
  • Nick
Nick: Nick
Position: Retired Admin
Nick was also another technical guy who was well liked by all the users. He mysteriously disappeared after a little while, and many people are wondering about his whereabouts.

Rules

If you don't follow them, it may result in a warning, kick, room ban, and possibly server ban. You can type /rules at any time on the chatroom to see the list of rules. Please remember that while the rules are a guideline, they can't cover everything, and the mods' word should always be followed.

Advertise on the Chat

If you have a site you want to advertise on the chat, you may do so. If you think that your site is not big enough to affiliate with the main Shurtugal site, you can affiliate with the chat instead!

So how does this work? Simple. You put our link on your site (http://www.shurtugal.com/?id=site/chat). In return, we will put your site link in the topic of the chat's main room, #General_Discussion, and we may send a global announcement (a message that everyone currently on the chat will recieve) advertising your site a few times. It will also be included in the MOTD (message of the day) when you first connect to the chat. If you have or know a site that would like to affiliate with the chat, pm the link to Jamie or Greg, and we will give it an ok if we think it's good.

One thing: your site must be active every day and be visited by at least ten people each day in order for us to affiliate with you. Also, the "no posting links" rule is being bended a little. You are allowed to post the link to or any sublink of a site affiliated with the chat (but not excessively, remember) on the main channel, #General_Discussion.

If you have any questions, pm Jamie.

FAQ

I can't connect to the chat!

If you're connecting via the Java applet, it may be that there's a problem with the chat server, which will be fixed and then the chat will be back up and running soon enough. If you're connecting via mIRC, check to see that you put the correct server IP. Otherwise, if you tried both, then it's most likely that the chat is facing some downtime, which will be fixed asap. Or it is possible that you got server banned if you were breaking the rules numerous times. If you think that this is the reason, send an email to the chat by using the feedback form on Shurtugal.com

I can't get into the main room!

If you can connect to the server, but can't connect to #General_Discussion, then it's most likely that you got banned from the room. Try going into another room and private messaging a moderator, and they will check if you are banned.

What do the weird symbols mean next to peoples' names?

@ - means that the person has access to the channel as a founder, admin, or moderator.
@ OR  - means that the person is a Super Op (SOP) of the room.
@ or faded  - face means that the person is a moderator of the room.
% or  face - means that the person is a half-moderator of the room. They are able to kick/ban/change modes, but they do not have the full privelages of a moderator.
+ or normal  face - means that the person has a voice in the room and can still speak if the room gets muted.

NOTE: The symbols are only seen by mIRC users and the smileys are seen by Java applet users. If you're using the Java applet, the symbols will be replaced by smilies. The Java applet has a glitch where if you return to the room #General_Discussion after you've been in a room where you're a mod, it will show you as a moderator on #General_Discussion. Please know that if this happens, and you are not one of the above listed moderators, then it is probably because of the glitch. It will show you with a moderator smiley, but you do not have any powers that the moderators have.

I'm typing things, but it's not coming up. Why?

This is probably due to the fact that the room got muted because things were getting out of hand. Other unlikely reasons are that you got temporarily shunned from the server (you are unable to talk) because you were breaking the rules, or you got a quiet ban (you can't talk) on the channel, or a channel got quiet banned, and if you're in the channel that got quiet banned, then you will be unable to talk.

Someone is breaking the rules. How do I contact a moderator?

You can private message (pm) a moderator on the channel. This is done by double clicking someone's name on the side nick list. You may then tell them what time and what the person was doing to break the rules (the best way to do this is by logs, which is basically copy and pasting what was said that includes the time, the nick, and what was said), and the moderator will check and the right actions will be taken.

A moderator is breaking the rules. What should I do?

If a moderator or an admin is breaking the rules, the best thing to do is to alert another moderator who is not breaking the rules, and they will then take the right actions. Or, if Greg or Parker are on, alert them, for they have the greatest access to the chat. If another moderator is not on, you may use the feedback form on Shurtugal.com to contact other moderators of the chat.

How do I do those smileys that everyone are using?

The following codes are used to make the smileys:

:)
:(
:P
;)
:D
;(
:banghead:
:hello:
:bye:
:applause:

Type the following code into where you type text to use a smiley.

What is a "bot?"

A bot is short for a robot, which is basically something that runs on scripts. The main bot of the chat is called Modbot, and Modbot has a group of scripts that allow him to keep some sanity if the other moderators are away. Users can also make their own bots if they own mIRC. This is done by knowing IRC scripting, which is like a mini-language that is built in with mIRC. You must have mIRC to script though, and you can download it here.

How do I/Can I become a moderator?

Well first off, you don't become a moderator by bugging a moderator if you can become one. When there are moderator job openings, they will be posted in the topic of #General_Discussion, where everyone will be able to see them. A good chatter will have not broken any rules and been chatting well for a bit, and if they apply, they will be more likely to be accepted as a moderator. So to put it simply, be good, apply, and see if you get the job.
