Teirm is a city in Alagaësia, and lies along the coast.

Overview

Teirm is a heavily fortified city. Due to frequent pirate raids, Teirm has a large surrounding wall, as well as many strategicly placed houses. Eragon and Brom stayed their with Jeod, Brom's friend who earned himself the name Longshanks because of his bad luck. Angela the herbalist and Solembum also lived there. Angela and Solembum meet Eragon later in Tronjheim. Angela tells Eragon's fortune while he is in Teirm: he has many choices in his future, has battles raging around him, the powers of Alagaësia fights to control his destiny, and countless paths will come, all bloody, but one will bring happiness. Even if he tries to avoid it, it is inescapable, he will have to leave Alagaësia forever.

Design

Teirm was designed to be easily defensible. The tallest buildings are located in the northeast section of the city, situated against the gigantic citadel. The buildings become continually smaller, the smallest houses being set against the large white wall surrounding the city.

The strategy behind this planning is if the outer areas of the city were breached, archers could stand on the roofs of the houses and shoot down their targets. Those on the taller buildings would not have to worry about accidentally shooting their allies due to the decreasing size of the buildings.

Teirm has two gates - one facing the sea to the west, and one opening south.

Role in the Inheritance Cycle

In Eragon, Teirm is the home of Jeod, an old friend of Brom's who aided Brom and Eragon by helping them locate records for shipments of Seithr oil used by the Ra'zac. While there, Eragon met the herbalist and fortuneteller Angela and had his fortune told.

In Eldest, Roran and the villagers of Carvahall sought out a ship there in order to gain passage to the Varden after Carvahall was attacked and left in ruins by the Ra'zac.
