Significance in the Books
Eldest
This belt once belonged to Beloth the Wise, a figure mentioned in the scroll The Year of Darkness. It is made of blue and black threads, woven closely into an interlocking pattern showing a picture of a coiling Lian'i Vine. On the belt are the most perfect gems in all of Alagaesia. There are twelve diamonds on it; four white, four black, one red, one blue, one yellow, and one brown. The stones were gathered long ago by Dragon riders of legend. Some were won over in battle, while others were mined or traded for with the dwarves. While the gems hold no magic of their own, energy can be stored there for withdrawal at a later date.
In Eldest, Eragon is presented with the belt as one of three gifts from Oromis when he sets out to the Burning Plains, to do battle with the Empire, and make good on his oath of fealty to Nasuada. In the battle itself, Eragon must draw upon the belt's magical energy reserves more than once as he fights against various Imperial magicians and soldiers. Finally, he drains the last of its reserves to fight Murtagh, the newest rider.
