History
The Varden was formed by Brom when he was gathering people to overthrow Galbatorix and the Forsworn. Brom was heartbroken after his dragon Saphira was slain, and he rallied up many people who were willing to fight. Brom was the first leader of the Varden, but then he gave up his position to another so that he could pursue his true destiny: to defeat Morzan and the other Forsworn. The leader before Ajihad was Denyor.
Purpose
The purpose of the Varden is to overthrow the Empire and its ruler, King Galbatorix. Their amount of supplies is limited, but King Orrin of Surda secretly gives goods to them. The Dwarves also show their support by alowing the Varden to lodge in their capital, Farthen Dur. Also, some traders, like Jeod, secretly would ship goods to the Varden, but they were discovered because The Twins presumeably told Galbatorix and their boats were attacked. Very few to no traders ship goods to the Varden nowadays.
Location
The original location of the Varden is in the great mountain of Farthen Dur, near the lake called Kostha Merna, located in the monstrous Beor Mountains. Here the king of the dwarves, Hrothgar, allowed them to stay. Not all the dwarves were willing in this decision of their king, but they accepted it nonetheless. The Varden stayed there for a long time, until Ajihad died and their new leader, Nasuada decided that they move to a safer place. In Eldest, she takes the Varden to Surda, their current location. They are housed by King Orrin, but the heat and lack of food and shelter is infuriating. The population of the Varden is noticably increased when Roran brings the villagers of Carvahall, who lend themselves to the service of the Varden.
Important People
Ajihad
Ajihad is the leader of the Varden in Eragon. He is known to be a strong ruler among his people. He dies in Eldest after the Twins betray the Varden. He is also father to Nasuada, who is chosen as leader after his death.
The Twins
The Twins are two of the strongest magicians in the Varden. They're cunning and deceitful, and they test Eragon for his magical abilities when he comes to the Varden. They kill Ajihad and capture Murtagh after leading a band of Urgals upon the Varden. They are killed by Roran with his hammer, as he sneeks up behind them.
Jormundur
Jormundur is Ajihad's right-hand man in the Varden's army. He is also part of the Council of Elders, though he is careful about his decisions while in that group, for he has no desire to disrupt the power of the Council by taking more power than he needs.
Nasuada
Nasuada is the daughter of Ajihad, who takes the position of the Varden leader in Eldest after her father Ajihad dies. She may seem young, but she is very competent in her abilities. She decides to take the Varden to Surda and comes up with a brilliant idea of making lace to get money for the Varden. she secretly fought at the Battle of Farthen Dur
Arya
Arya is the elf princess that Eragon and Murtagh bring to the Varden. Eragon freed her from inprisonment in Gil'ead. Once healed, Arya plays many important roles in the Varden, such as testing Eragon in swordsmanship, participating in the battle of Farthen Dur, and helping Eragon defeat Durza the Shade.
Orik
Orik is the dwarf that rescues Eragon from the depths of Kostha Merna. Afterwards, Orik served as Eragon and Saphira's personal guide while in Farthen Dur. He also travels with them, alongside Arya, to Du Weldenvarden, sacred home of the elves. He later becomes Dwarf King
Battles
The Battle of Farthen Dur
The Battle of Farthen Dur took place at Farthen Dur as the name suggests. The Varden and dwarves fought against Urgals, who were led by Durza the Shade. The battle was fierce and unmoving in the fate of the Varden, but soon after, Eragon, with the help of Arya and Saphira, slew Durza, thus turning the tide of the battle in favor of the Varden. The Varden win, and Ajihad and a few others, including Murtagh, go to eliminate the remaining Urgals in the tunnels of Farthen Dur. However, the Twins betray the Varden and lead a small group of Urgals upon Ajihad, slaying him and capturing Murtagh.
Battle of the Burning Plains
This battle was fought on the Burning Plains of Alagaesia in Eldest. The Varden's numbers were small, so they manage to make an alliance with a group of Kull, led by Nar Garzhvog. They, along with the Kull, Arya, and Eragon, fight against massing amounts of Empire soldiers. The other dwarves, led by Hrothgar, come soon later to aid their battle. Roran and the majority of Carvahall also arrive on the Dragon Wing in the duration of the battle. However, when Murtagh appears as a Dragon Rider, he kills Hrothgar and engage in a furious battle between Eragon and Saphira. Murtagh spares their lives though and leaves, thus allowing the Varden to win the battle.
