Thorn
From The Inheritance Encyclopedia
Thorn is a dragon introduced in Eldest. He is Murtagh's dragon.
Description
Thorn is the red dragon belonging to Murtagh. He is a male. Thorn is "red as an ember with spikes along his spine that are white as snow." Thorn is slightly smaller than Saphira but stronger, due to his stockier build and larger muscles. However, Thorn is neither as agile as Saphira, nor as experienced. Despite his youth, he can already breath fire. However, it should be noted that his exact age is unclear, but Eldest most likely lasted long enough for him to develop this ability. Thorn also has rare eyes, because if you look on the cover of Eldest it looks like he has fire whirling in his eyes. In Brisingr, Glaedr bit off the last three feet off Thorn's tail after Oromis is killed.
Importance
Thorn meets Saphira for the first time when he appears during the Battle of the Burning Plains. His rider, Murtagh, killed the dwarven king Hrothgar, and almost gave Eragon and Saphira over to Galbatorix.
Not much else is known about Thorn but from what we do know, he is a formidable and dangerous beast. From being trained by Shruikan and Galbatorix, he obviously gained great strength and power...exactly what powers have yet to be seen . According to Paolini , Book Three will go more in-depth on how Thorn matured so much faster than Saphira. He and his Rider fight in perfect harmony, and Murtagh loves him to the point that he would give up his own life to save Thorn's.

I've only told this theory to a couple of my friends, and they said it was ok. So, here goes.
I think Thorn is (was) Morzan's Dragon. BAHHH!!! So many BAD VIBES I FEEL!!! Aight, hear me through.
Things we know about Morzan's dragon:
1) Nothing
2)If you look really closely, it says that Morzan's dragon was red. Where, you ask??? Well, Zar'roc is red, and in the Time if the Riders, the Riders' swords were the same color as their dragons. Zar'roc used to be Morzan's, sooo...his dragon was red!
Things we know about Thorn:
1) He's red (wink wink)
2) Is Murtagh's dragon now.
3) Was full grown at the Battle at the Burning Plains, but only had a couple of months or less to mature.
4) Under Galbitorix's control, possibly twisted into doing anything for him by the same blck magic he used to make Shruikan hatch for him. So, he could probably make the dragon become loyal to Murtagh, and make Murtagh loyal to Thorn.
What do you think??? Leave a comment about it, plz!!! Thanx! --Estuell 18:30, 3 April 2007 (PDT)
i dont think so, if he was then he would be almost as big as Glaedr, but he is just a little smaller than Saphira. only bigger in the legs and shoulders. --ty 14:02, 12 April 2007 (PDT)eragon1301
Maybe he's bigger just because he's male?User:Eragon5136ty]] 21:19 12 April 2007
bigger than who? --eragon1301
I think you have your facts a little wrong. shrukian did not Hatch for galbatorix, Galbatorix Killed the dragons Rider and took Shrukian for himself. He was not Fully grown at the battle of the burning plains, and if he was, he was a sad excuse for a dragon. and besides how would Thorn be healthy and able to fight if he was Morzan's Dragon? Dragons and their riders are magically connected the the gedway insignia and such, Morzan is dead, therefore if his dragon Didnt die and was still alive all these Many years later, he would be in No shape to fight. Also how could Murtagh use magic if Thorn was still Morzan's Dragon? the only way one gets the Gedway Insignia is from touching a NEWBORN Dragon. If Thorn was was Morzan's Dragon there is no way that Murtagh could have touched it when it was a newborn. there are WAY too many holes in your theory for it to be plausable. although if this was true it would take at least 100 pages of explanation, because it goes against most of what he has already told us. at least you're thinking though. -your freindly neighborhood Green Lantern!
you have a couple holes, shurikan could have been grown at the first battle at the burning plains, look at how thorn was almost as big as saphira but at least 6 months younger, probly some dark magic. eragon1301
I would just like to say that Estuell, that was a really good theory, but I don't think so, because of the whole size thing, but maybe Galbatorix could have stopped it growing with a spell or something, but to what end, I have not yet thought through. - Hot Elf Babe
Not to mention that it says that as Morzan died, so did his dragon. Doesn't it say that?... --I Believe 12:29, 19 May 2007 (PDT)
Not that I know of. And the fact that a dragon dies as his rider does was invented for the movie. -Henroast 13:13, 19 May 2007 (PDT)
Ah. Sorry, that must be where I heard of it. Even though, I think I'll go and check the book, because I really don't think that Thorn was Morzan's Dragon. Couldn't Galbatorix have used his powers that get stronger every year to accelerate Thorn's growth? --I Believe 12:54, 24 May 2007 (PDT)
5. Wrong! I belive that Thorn can't be Murtagh's Dragon for it said "Thorn hatched for me." So that's wrong
6. but if galbortrix used dark magic on thorn wouldn't thorn's scales and claws be black like shrikan? just saying
7. ok..Here's what i think: Murtagh, after being taken to galbatorix had one of the remaining dragon eggs left hatch for him and he was named thorn. either with black magics or shuriken training thorn, Thorn became bigger and grew faster somehow or another.
Maybe Galby exposed Murtagh to Thorn's egg before he left and followed the Raz'ac, so Murtagh never touched him before the Twins took him away alive to go to his dragon, which would make Thorn as old as Saphira. almost exactly if you tink about the timeline. So Galby raised Thorn and waited for the Twins to bring Murtagh back while training Thorn.- safira
to estuell:in book 3,Eragon finds out that through superb magic the dragons reduced all of the forsworn's dragons to mindless animals.thorn thinks for himself, so thorn cannot be morzan's dragon.
incorrect we have never heard thorn think or speak so your wrong besdies there were three eggs now there one thorn is not morzans brom himself killed morzan dragon so there conor
I'll clear this up in book three it say all of the forsworn's dragons names are taken from them. Obviously Thorn has a name so your idea is wrong. Good thinking though.
