Everything in Alagaƫsia has a true name. If someone knows your true name, they have immense power over you. Brom tells this to Eragon when they are traveling together. Elves instinctively know theirs, and the human Dragon Riders would go on a quest to find theirs or would attempt find an Elf to tell them, although this was rare. It has been thought that Eragon will learn his true name and will speak it at the Rock of Kuthian to open the Vault of Souls. When he is captured by Durza, Eragon makes up a "true name" to fool him: "Du Sundavar Freohr, which means "Death of the Shadows" in the Ancient Language. It is unlikely that this is in fact his true name. Galbotorix knows Murtagh's and Thorn's true names, and can thus control them. In Brisingr Eragon derives Sloan's true name and uses it to bind him to an oath.

If one changes who they are in a significant way, their true name will change as well.
