The Vault of Souls was first mentioned in Eragon shortly after Angela told Eragon's fortune in Teirm. Solembum the werecat told him, in addition to looking under the roots of the Menoa tree when he needs a weapon, that when his power seems insufficient to go to the Rock of Kuthian and speak his name to the open Vault of Souls. The second part of the prophecy is not spoken about until the end of Brisingr, after Eragon discovers that Murtagh and Galbatorix are using Eldunari to expand their power. He asks both Arya and Oromis whether they have ever heard of the Rock of Kuthian or the Vault of Souls and while the name Kuthian rings a familiar bell in their mind they cannot remember exactly where they heard it.
